Homeopathy in acute and subacute sinusitis

The sinusitis acute is an inflammation of the sinuses , or not reaching the periosteum, with soon suppurative process . They are observed most of the time during the evolution of untreated acute coryzas, of which they represent a painful complication.

Symptomatic medications

Before the suppurative stage:

As soon as the first symptoms of acute coryza appear, the patient reports pain at the root of the nose and the frontal sinuses . Taking homeopathic medicines prevents these symptoms from developing into a suppurative process.

• Sticta pulmonaria :

This medicine is taken in case of dry coryza , the patient trying in vain to blow his nose; he presents with pain in the root of the nose , as if gripped by the clamp of a binocular. This pain may radiate to the frontal region.

Dosage : Take in 5 CH, in frequently repeated doses. The indication of the drug ceases with the appearance of discharge.

• Kalium iodatum :

The symptomatology begins with a watery , abundant and irritating coryza . The nose becomes swollen and red, the eyes watery, burning and puffy . Gradually, pain will appear in the frontal sinuses and a feeling of constriction at the root of the nose . Symptoms are worse in fresh air.

Dosage : Take every hour, 5 granules in 9 CH at least, gradually space out the doses with a decrease in the intensity of the symptoms.

In the suppurative stage:

The determination of the homeopathic medicine is made on the quality of the flow and on its modalities.

• Kalium bichromicum :

This medication is indicated when sinusitis was preceded by coryza manifested by congestion of the nostrils with feeling of dryness, obstruction and pressure at the root of the nose . These feelings persist.

There is in addition a muco-purulent rhinorrhea, yellow-greenish, shooting, viscous and adherent , willingly streaked with blood . By blowing the nose, the patient expels hard and adherent elastic plugs which leave the nasal mucosa raw and burning. The improvement is made with heat.

• Hydrastis canadensis :

The secretions are thick, yellowish , very viscous and very adherent , concreting at the level of the orifice of the nostrils while there is a slow flow in the cavum. The patient feels a sensation of nasal obstruction in a warm room.

• Cinnabaris :

This medicine corresponds to posterior rhinorrhea with stringy mucus that is difficult to peel off. The patient feels pain at the level of the dorsal surface of the nose , as if from heavy spectacles. The pains can be periorbital, in the type of violent stitches which seem to start from the lacrimal orifice to end at the temple, with scarlet redness of the eye . Cinnabaris can also find its indication in ethmoidal or sphenoidal sinusitis.

• Mercurius solubilis :

The rhinorrhea is frankly purulent, greenish, abundant, excoriating the orifices of the nostrils; the nasal mucosa is very inflamed, swollen, painful. There is also an increase in sialorrhea, a tongue that retains the imprint of teeth and fetid breath. Burning and profuse tearing may also be associated. The skin is moist; the patient feels shivers on the surface of the skin, he perspires at night and is aggravated by the heat.

• Mezerium :

This medicine is used in case of burning pains in the bones of the nose and face , or in case of muco-purulent rhinorrhea streaked with blood . Symptoms are aggravated at night, by cold and by pressure on painful areas. There is a good complementarity between Mezereum and Kalium bichromicum .

• Lachesis mutus :

The prescription of this venom is done in front of the presence of an inflammation with the modality of aggravation of the symptomatology in front of the absence or the stoppage of the flow , or in front of the opposite modality: improvement in the appearance or in the resumption of flow . The left side of the drug does not enter into the determination of the drug.

Dosage : Take Lachesis 9 or 15 CH, by 5 granules every 2 to 4 hours. In the case of intense pain due to the cessation of purulent rhinorrhea, the resumption of the flow with the administration of Lachesis mutus must be rapid, in 12 to 24 hours maximum, otherwise, the patient must be entrusted to a ENT specialist for an operation.

Suppuration drugs

To stop the suppurative process, it is advisable to add:

• Pyrogenium :

This drug can be taken systematically in front of any localized inflammatory phenomenon with suppurative phase and improvement by local heat, especially if it is accompanied by a febrile reaction.

Dosage : Take a tube-dose daily in 9 CH, in addition to symptomatic homeopathic medicines, until the symptoms disappear.

• Hepar sulfur :

This drug complements Pyrogenium in acute suppurative processes. It is necessary to avoid low dynamizations which favor suppuration.

Dosage : Taking 4 doses “in scale” gives maximum safety and results: it is a question of taking for 4 consecutive days, a daily dose of Hepar sulfur in increasing dilutions: 9 CH the first day, 12 CH on the second day, 15 CH on the third day and 30 CH on the fourth day. Each dose being preceded 2 hours before by taking a dose of Pyrogenium 9 CH.

Technique for taking in the suppurative stage:

Acute sinusitis has the particularity of presenting at one point in its course a suppurative phase which evolves in an almost closed cavity, which can even close completely in cases where the inflammation reduces the communication lights to the point of obstructing them. The method of taking will be different depending on whether the purulent secretions will be abundant, scanty, or even stopped.

If the classic rule of dosage requires the use of low dilutions when taking on local symptoms, it must be remembered that, when a reaction is provoked at the level of an organ, low dilutions lead to an increase in secretion , while high dilutions lead to a decrease in this secretion.

Acute sinusitis with abundant secretion:

Take doses of 5 pellets repeated every hour, spacing out the doses as the intensity of the symptoms decreases.

Do not take symptomatic medication below 9 CH!

Subacute sinusitis with scanty secretion:

The catches will be less frequent: 5 granules 1 to 3 times a day until symptoms disappear. In cases where the muco-purulent secretion can be evacuated from the sinuses without problem, but where the phenomenon tends to stagnate or to be rebellious, it is often advantageous to temporarily reactivate the secretory process with low dilutions .

Acute sinusitis with disappearance of the flow:

This is the case where Lachesis mutus must be used , in repeated doses of 5 granules. It is also necessary to dry up the secretions by prescribing symptomatic drugs at least in 9 CH.

Dosage example

First example:

Consider the case of a patient presenting with acute frontal sinusitis with abundant purulent discharge and periorbital pain.

Dosage :

1 → Four mornings in a row, when you wake up, take a tube-dose of:

• Pyrogenium 9 CH, followed, 2 hours later, by taking a dose of:
• Hepar sulfur 9 CH, the 1st day,
• Hepar sulfur 12 CH, the 2nd day,
• H. sulfur 15 CH, on the 3rd day,
• H. sulfur 30 CH, the 4th day.

2 → During the day alternate, approximately every hour, 5 granules of:

• Kalium bichromicum 9 CH with 5 granules of:
• Cinnabaris 9 CH.

Space the catches according to the reduction in the intensity of the symptoms.

Second example:

Take the case of a patient presenting with dragging, painful, radiopaque maxillary sinusitis.

Dosage :

1 → For 1 week, take upon waking and at bedtime 5 granules of:

• Kalium bichromicum 5 CH,

Midday and evening before the meal, 20 drops of:

• Hydrastis 6DH diluted in a little pure water.

2 → The following 2 weeks, every morning upon waking 5 granules of:

• Pyrogenium 9 CH

Midday and evening before the meal 5 granules of:

• Kalium bichromicum 9 CH

At bedtime, a tube-dose of:

• Hepar sulfur 9 CH, the 1st evening,
• Hepar sulfur 12 CH, the 2nd evening,
• H. sulfur 15 CH, the 3rd evening,
• H. sulfur 15 CH, the 4th evening,

And the following evenings, 5 pellets of:

• Mezereum 9 CH
